Advice for Internet Marketing Newbies

by Dan Waggoner, under Internet Marketing
by: Dan Waggoner

Today I want to give some helpful advice for the Internet Marketing Newbies. Yes, I know that the term “Newbie” is a terrible word. I hate it too, but hopefully it will get the point across. I am still relatively new in this field myself.

My advice is simple and it comes from my own experiences and what I’ve learned so far. Read as much as you can and learn as much as you can but work in your own league. Be very weary of the so called Big Shots and Gurus out there.

Partnering with other people is good and can be very beneficial but try to do it with people and or companies who are on the same level as you. How do you know who is on the same level as you? It’s simple. If you make an attempt to contact somebody and they either (A) don’t respond at all or (B) send you some kind of automated response then they are not in your league and a waste of your time.

You’ll accomplish much more partnering and learning with people who actually personally answer their emails. The gurus are too worried about getting your money as opposed to trying to earn money with you. Besides, why would you want to deal with somebody who won’t even respond to an email or who sends out automated responses. To me that’s just not a good way of doing business. I make it a point to personally answer all my emails in any given day if it’s a real email. I don’t answer automated email addressed to me because it’s not real people. It’s just somebody trying to sell me something. Take it from a guy who spent 16 years in the people business. You can never do better than giving the personal touch.

Understandably some of them are doing so well that they don’t have time for the small timers like you and me but that just solidifies my point. Internet Marketing can be a great business to be in and there is much room for advancement but always try to associate with real people and for that matter always treat people like they are people. Don’t waste your time or money on somebody who is too big for their own good.

Simply put, as an Internet Marketing Newbie it’s ok to learn from the Guru but don’t become the Guru.

Best Wishes!

You made it to email of the week at John Chows blog, see http://www.johnchow.com/the-email-of-the-week Well done! SY

  • Dan

Thanks for the news Hospitalera. Yes it appears that John took this blog post to heart so he is lashing out. Oh well! There’s no advertisement like free advertisement.

  • hospitalera

Lol, so you didn’t write the email? SY

  • Dan

Oh yes….I absolutely wrote the email.
I’m just saying that John follows my blog
and this particular post must have hurt his feelings
even though I didn’t directly name him in the
blog post he must have assumed it was written
about him and this is his way of retaliating.
I wrote a comment on his post. Let’s see if he post it.

  • Mike CJ

There are quite a few positive comments on that post now. Including my own. I think John made a bigger mistake in publishing that with your name than you did with the original email.

Stick with it, and I totally agree about personal contact.

  • John

I’ve been directed to your website via John Chow’s. Interesting so far.

Just a thought. Not trying to judge your blog, but you should remove the “Hint:” under the Welcome in the top right hand corner. Makes it seem less professional with it. Just thought I’d mention that as some friendly feedback. =) Other then that, you have a very nice blog.

Um, regarding this post. I understand you’re angry with Guru’s (John Chow in particular), but I don’t think the last sentence portrays what you’re trying to say. I sort of get what you are saying though. – Something like, don’t be as arrogant and some gurus out there. – However, if you continue on this road to becoming a well known marketer, people may look at you as a Guru.

Ah well, I don’t know what I’m getting at. =P

Anyways, best of luck and stick in there!

Hi John….Thanks for the advice and I appreciate the kind words.
John’s just upset about the blog post but he’ll get over it.
If you want to get right down to it the post wasn’t even directed
towards him but he must have taken it that way.

  • Dan

    Hello Mike,

I appreciate you saying that. Your support means a lot to me.
Thanks again! Like I said, the post wasn’t actually directed
towards John but he assumed it was I guess.

    Hi Dan,

There is only one thing that doesn’t fit and that is that John does answer to emails. I checked and I had several responses from him over the last few months. Nothing out of the world, but also not an automated reply. SY

  • Dan

    Hi hospitalera,

You are correct. John does answer his emails but this article wasn’t written about him at the time.
It was written as a general statement. Like I said, I believe he read the article and assumed it was
about him and that’s why he posted my email for the whole world to read. I think he may have taken
this article as a personal attack on him. It really doesn’t matter anymore because I’m past it.
John is obviously a very intelligent guy. He just needs some people skills and needs to remember
    where he came from.

    Best Wishes

Something else I am really interested to know is how much traffic the whole thing actually brought to your blog ;-) I hope a lot, so that you get a bit of recompensation for the hassle, SY

PS Do you have right-click disabled on your blog here? I can’t use the FireFox spellchecker, the menu doesn’t show up when I right-click on a misspelled word ;-(

  • Dan

    hospitalera,

There was a small spike in traffic but nothing major. Yes…..right click is disabled on this blog.
I initially enabled the function to keep thieves from stealing content but they continue to find new ways
to do it. I may just go ahead and remove the block. Still thinking about it.

  • hospitalera

    @Dan
You can’t keep thieves that want to steal content from doing so, crtl/cmd+a and crtl/cmd+c is all what is needed. You just annoy and confuse your readers, SY

  • Dan

Try it now. It should work fine for you.
    Thanks for the tip!
