Before you start earning money by marketing your own product or music or somebody else’s product online, there are some steps you need to take and some considerations you need to make first. The money you earn online can be life changing but trust me when I say it’s going to be a whole lot easier with your own business website. As a matter of fact, not having your own site in this day and time is similar to an airline company trying to fly planes without any fuel. You simply won’t get very far.
When discussing the building of your business site there are always a few questions that often come up.
One such question is should you build your own business website or should you pay somebody to create it for you. The answer to this will be determined whether you have the time to personally dedicate to building it. You can certainly pay a design company to create one for you. There are many competent design companies out there who will build a very nice site for you. You will need to make sure that you have plenty of money to spare and also that you describe to them exactly what you want the website to do. The cost will generally range between two hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on what you need the site to do.
If you just don’t have the time available to build it yourself and plenty money at your disposal then this would be the way to go.
For those of you who don’t have a ton of money to spare and do have an interest in building your own website then I would highly recommend doing so.
The benefits of building it yourself is not just the monetary savings but also the control and freedom to design it to fit your needs perfectly. I created this entire website and blog myself and trust me when I say… if I can do it, anybody can do it. It has much to do with taking an interest and applying yourself. It can, however, seem somewhat complicated if you don’t have the proper direction and tools along with a decent web hosting company.
The first thing you will need to do is set up an account with a web hosting company who has a really good reputation. I have a link above for the best one I have found. They have easy to use tools, an award winning staff and once you set up your personal workstation you will have all the attributes and reporting tools you could ever possibly need.
Be sure to pick a well thought out domain name for your website. What I mean by this is if your business is going to sell wallets then maybe you want your domain name to be www.bestwalletsonline.com. It will be a tremendous benefit to your online business if you can use a keyword in your domain name. I realize that some of you may not know what I mean by “keyword” yet but trust me when I say keywords are important. Keywords are words people enter into a search engine search box to find what they are looking for so in the example above if your business is selling wallets then you definitely want the word “wallets” in your domain name. Keep it simple and memorable.
Of course right now you’re probably thinking wait a minute, Dan, if that’s the case then why is your website named Modern Day Peasants. Well, I’m glad you asked. Ultimately the answer is that I made the decision to name it before I learned about keywords and their impact on website traffic. I thought it was a cool name that people would remember and many people have but if I knew then what I know now the site would have a different name. So isn’t that great? You already have a very valuable piece of information that I found too late! Ok…back to the business at hand.
Once your domain name is chosen then it’s time to actually start building. At this point you will need to open your site building software and set up your pages. Do Not Publish Anything Too Soon! I’ve made that statement in bold and underlined because I don’t want you to make another mistake that I made.
Publishing to soon can only hurt your site, not help it. It will be tough because you will be in a hurry to publish so the world can see what you’ve built but restrain yourself from doing so. Building a good website involves testing and editing also but we’ll get into that on another post.
As I’ve stated previously, It’s very important to pick a good hosting company with great tools. A great web hosting company will have not only great tools but also great templates which can make a huge difference in the effectiveness of your site. Pick a template that best describes or resembles what you want your site to look like. The more templates available, the more choices for you to build a well designed website. This is important especially if you are going to use the site for your business.
The website needs to appear well thought out, needs to be easy on the eyes and easy to use. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. When you visit a website you want it to get right to the point, to be easy to navigate, and you want to be able to find what you are looking for quickly.
Once you’ve picked the proper template for your site, you can start plugging in text and sales ads or whatever else you would like to add. Most everything is added with html. This is an initialism for Hypertext Mark-up Language. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document—by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, etc.—and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. Don’t worry yourself too much about html. It’s not very difficult. More or less you will be doing a lot of copy and pasting to your template. You can add images, text, sales ads and just about anything else you need on your site by using html.
After your page is set up the way you want it to look you can also begin adding other items to your page such as email registration, links to other pages in your site or another business website, grafts and charts, advertisement, color schemes, text color and much more.
This is the beauty of building your own website. You can customize it to fit your needs and or your customer’s needs.
I won’t tell you that building your own site will not come with some frustration. Some people can build their own website very fast and have it work well. For others it may take some time to learn to use all the tools at your disposal.
If you have about an hour a day that should be sufficient. Generally speaking you can have a well built site of your own up and running in about 3 to 4 days. For some of you who are more familiar with the building tools you can have a usable site up in hours. However, it is likely that you will always be updating your website or changing and modifying it. If your not constantly updating and adding to your website your visitors and or customers won’t keep coming back for more. Besides when it’s your baby and you built it, it is only natural to always want to keep making it better and better. Constant improvement will serve to better your position in the online business world!
Be on the look out for up and coming articles on driving traffic and a wealth of additional knowledge to assist you in building your new business website. You will also find plenty of posts related to different products you can market on your new site. I write quite a bit on this blog and it’s in no certain order. I write whatever comes to me at any certain time so my advice is to either use the search box to find the articles you’re looking for or use the categories on the right hand side of this page and go through the previous posts.
The final message I want to get across here is that if you need help or have a question then for heaven’s sake ask me. My email address is plastered all over this blog as well as Modern Day Peasants. I promise I don’t bite and I certainly don’t mind helping folks out! I also stay very busy and get a ton of email so if I don’t get back to you right away just hang tight. I will get back to you! This is a huge step you are taking and you will experience plenty excitement along with much aggravation over the coarse of the next few weeks and months as you are learning and perfecting your site. Remember, anybody can build a site. Only a few can build a successful website.
Love what you do and let your passion lead the way.
